The Baltimore Orioles have unveiled a state-of-the-art $23 million player development complex at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Florida. This impressive facility, completed in under a year, will serve as a year-round training hub for the team's players. The complex, designed by Fawley Bryant and built by Tandem Construction, boasts a range of cutting-edge features, including a 15,970-square-foot batting cage, a 3,400-square-foot biomechanics lab, and an 10,300-square-foot bullpen area with eight mounds. The facility also includes a 1,680-square-foot player lounge, conference rooms, classroom space, offices, and a locker room, all designed to enhance the player experience and provide a top-notch training environment.
"This is a dream come true for us," said Mike Elias, Baltimore's president of operations. "It's a significant advantage for our players' development and training. We believe this facility will be the best spring training setup in Florida."
The biomechanics lab, equipped with 37 cameras, will be a valuable asset for both hitters and pitchers, offering detailed biomechanical analysis, pitch design, swing adjustments, and performance feedback. The lab will enable the team to track full-body movements and capture how athletes are moving, providing valuable insights for player development.
"It's going to be incredible," said Joey Mylott, the team's biomechanist. "We'll be able to get full-body biomechanics data and analyze how our players are moving."
The facility also features an outdoor agility field, double the size of the previous one, allowing players to train regardless of the weather. The agility field, similar to those used by the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays, is equipped with yard markers for precise time and speed tracking. This ensures that players can maintain their training routines even on rainy days without thunder.
"We'll be able to get out here and get our work done," said Nick White, the Orioles head of strength and performance. "It's all about optimizing our training environment and keeping our players on track."
The Orioles' spring training home opener is set for February 20th against the New York Yankees, and the team is confident that this new complex will significantly contribute to their players' development and success in the upcoming season.
