In a pivotal moment for Chelsea, head coach Liam Rosenior faces a series of challenging decisions as his team prepares for a Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend.
After suffering a heartbreaking loss to Arsenal, the Blues have a prime opportunity to bounce back against Wolves, who currently sit at the bottom of the league table with a mere eight points from 24 matches. Although there have been signs of improvement in Wolves' performance lately, the daunting reality of relegation looms large for them, making this an essential match for Chelsea.
Rosenior is well aware that complacency could be detrimental, especially with the team's desire to regain form and momentum. As he strategizes for the lineup, two of our contributors, Bobby Vincent and Sam Truelove, share their insights on the ideal starting eleven for Saturday's game.
Bobby Vincent's Perspective:
Starting with Robert Sanchez in goal seems a given. The defense could feature Malo Gusto at right-back, alongside Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah in central defense, with Marc Cucurella rounding out the back line on the left. However, the status of Reece James remains uncertain, adding complexity to Rosenior's choices.
In midfield, it appears that Andrey Santos may not make the cut. A pairing of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez would provide stability, while Estevao Willian and Alejandro Garnacho are expected to occupy the wings. Although Garnacho's recent performances have left much to be desired, the options available to Rosenior are limited. Alternatively, Pedro Neto could be considered for a starting role, but his absence in the previous match due to injury introduces an element of risk.
Up front, Cole Palmer could take the No. 10 position, and there's a strong need to see him develop a connection with Joao Pedro. Early indicators suggest a budding partnership, but opportunities to witness their synergy on the pitch have been scarce.
Bobby's Proposed XI: Sanchez; Gusto, Fofana, Chalobah, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernandez; Estevao, Palmer, Garnacho; Joao Pedro.
Sam Truelove's Take:
Facing the bottom team in the Premier League allows Rosenior the chance to rotate his squad if he chooses. However, after the recent defeat against Arsenal, it’s crucial for Chelsea to secure a victory as they aim for a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.
Sam suggests giving Cucurella a rest and opting for Jorrel Hato instead. He also believes it would be wise to avoid risking players like Reece James and Pedro Neto, given their recent injuries. Chalobah, who Rosenior seems to favor, should pair with Benoit Badiashile in central defense, according to Sam.
In midfield, starting Palmer in the No. 10 role alongside Caicedo and Fernandez would be a strategic move, especially with the World Cup approaching. To complete the attack, Estevao, Joao Pedro, and Garnacho would form the front line, with Garnacho urged to deliver a standout performance to quell any criticism directed at him.
Sam's Recommended XI: Sanchez; Gusto, Chalobah, Badiashile, Hato; Caicedo, Fernandez; Estevao, Palmer, Garnacho; Joao Pedro.
