Hold onto your hats, folks, because a beloved British crime drama is shaking up its schedule! If you've been eagerly anticipating the next thrilling installment of "Death in Paradise," you might want to grab a cup of tea and settle in, as there's a slight hiccup in its broadcast. The much-loved cozy detective series, currently gracing our screens with its 15th season, has a minor delay for its fourth episode.
Usually, you'd find DI Mervin Wilson and the team solving mysteries on a Friday at 9 pm. However, the BBC has had to shuffle things around. But here's where it gets a bit disruptive for fans... The reason for this shift? The FA Cup is taking center stage, featuring a match between Hull City and Chelsea. This means our tropical getaway to Saint Marie is postponed! Instead of its usual Friday slot, the episode will now be broadcast on Monday, February 16th.
For those new to the island's charm, "Death in Paradise" has seen a few detectives lead the charge since its debut in 2011. The current lead, Don Gilet, who portrays Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson, is the fifth main detective to grace the show. He follows in the footsteps of notable actors like Ben Miller, Ardal O’Hanlon, Kris Marshall, and Ralf Little.
And this is the part that had many viewers talking... Recently, cast member Don Warrington, who plays the esteemed Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, addressed his surprising return to the show after what seemed like a definitive exit last season. His departure from the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie had sparked quite a reaction among fans, leading many to speculate if the producers reversed their decision to keep the audience happy.
However, Warrington, at 74 years old, clarified that this wasn't the case. He explained to The i that his character's exit was simply part of the storyline. "The producers thought it would be interesting to have Selwyn reach some kind of crisis, and then, after dealing with it, return. There was no Machiavellian intent," he stated. Warrington did express his delight at how much viewers connected with his character, noting, "It was certainly very nice to know that my character had penetrated into people’s consciousness to that extent, and that they liked him." He added with a warm touch, "It is rather nice to be liked."
In this latest series, DI Wilson is not only settling into his new role on Saint Marie but is also embarking on a journey to connect with his recently discovered half-brother, Solomon, played by TV newcomer Daniel Ward. Gilet shared insights into their dynamic, saying, "Well, I think phrases like ‘two peas in a pod,’ do not apply… They couldn’t be more opposite. There’s Mervin and then there’s this guy who is on the opposite side of the tracks, potentially the opposite side of the law too..."
"Death in Paradise" remains a firm favorite for BBC viewers, consistently drawing in an impressive five to six million viewers per episode. Its success even led to a spin-off, "Beyond Paradise," which premiered in 2022 and had its most recent episode air over Christmas in 2025. This spin-off features former "Death in Paradise" star Kris Marshall reprising his role as Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman, alongside Sally Bretton.
Now, over to you! Do you think the FA Cup is a worthy reason to delay such a popular show? Or perhaps you feel that storylines involving character crises, like Commissioner Patterson's, are more compelling than a simple exit? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
