In a bold move, Ken Casey, the lead singer of Dropkick Murphys, has taken to social media to express his frustration with the NFL's contradictory stance regarding Bad Bunny's upcoming performance during the Super Bowl halftime show. The heart of the matter lies in NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's recent comments suggesting that Bad Bunny should refrain from any political messaging during his big performance this Sunday. This stance feels particularly hypocritical to Casey, especially considering that the NFL previously held moments of silence to honor Charlie Kirk, a controversial right-wing activist, earlier in the season.
During a press conference, Goodell praised Bad Bunny, stating, "He is one of the great artists in the world, and that’s one of the reasons we chose him." However, he later added that while the Grammy Awards stage was suitable for such discussions, the Super Bowl platform is intended to unite audiences through creativity and talent. He emphasized that past artists have used this moment to bring people together, implying that Bad Bunny should adhere to this tradition in his upcoming performance.
Consequence recently spoke with Casey ahead of Dropkick Murphys’ St. Patrick's Day tour, where he shared his candid thoughts on both Bad Bunny's halftime show and Green Day's opening performance at the Super Bowl. "The NFL has made it clear that they don’t want a political discourse during the halftime show," Casey remarked. "Yet they expect everyone to sit through a moment of silence for Charlie Kirk? It’s quite a contradiction. Someone even mentioned you can bet on whether they will allow politics in the show, which is just insane!"
He continued, expressing his admiration for Bad Bunny, stating, "You have two fantastic American artists. Despite his background, Bad Bunny resonates with audiences everywhere—he won me over the moment I saw him in Happy Gilmore 2. My daughter had to tell me who he was, but ever since, I’ve been a fan. He’s currently one of the biggest stars globally, and we should celebrate his achievements regardless of personal taste in music."
Additionally, Casey didn't shy away from criticizing Turning Point USA’s planned "All-American Halftime Show," featuring Kid Rock as a counter-event to Bad Bunny's performance. His words were sharp: "For those who often label others as 'snowflakes,' you might just be the biggest snowflakes I've encountered. If you prefer to switch over to Kid Rock, go ahead! I'm eagerly anticipating the ratings comparison between Bad Bunny and Kid Rock, as it will reveal where Americans are truly focused."
In line with their own activism, Dropkick Murphys recently released a new track titled "Citizen I.C.E.," further demonstrating their stance on important social issues.
