Huge Invasive Turtle Found in Hong Kong Sparks Calls for Stricter Animal Welfare Laws (2026)

Animal Welfare Advocates Demand Stronger Laws After Invasive Turtle Discovered in Hong Kong

In a shocking revelation, Hong Kong animal rights activists are urging the government to take immediate action following the discovery of an abandoned 85 kg (187 lbs) alligator snapping turtle feasting on fish in a New Territories pond. This incident has sparked a heated debate among experts and the public alike, highlighting the need for stricter regulations.

The activists' demands include a comprehensive list of approved pets, microchipping of turtles sold to the public, harsher penalties for releasing pets into the wild, and an updated Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance. These measures are crucial to prevent further harm and ensure the well-being of both wildlife and pets.

Bon Chan Chung-pong, the founder of Turtle's Inn, shared a distressing account of the situation. He revealed that the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department had caught the massive alligator snapping turtle in Tai Sang Wai, Yuen Long, on January 13. Farmers had been reporting a mysterious decline in fish populations, with some fish found partially eaten.

The turtle, measuring approximately 1 meter (3.3 feet), was discovered when the pond was drained. Residents promptly alerted the police and department officers, leading to the turtle's capture. Chan, an experienced turtle handler with three decades of expertise, negotiated the transfer of the turtle to his care, sparing it from euthanasia. The turtle has now found a new home at the Sai Kung Turtle's Inn Community Education Base.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between human companionship and wildlife preservation. As the debate over animal welfare laws intensifies, it is crucial to address the concerns of both animal rights advocates and the public, ensuring a harmonious coexistence for all species involved.
