Indonesia is set to boost the mandatory bioethanol content in gasoline to 10% by 2028, according to an energy ministry official, Tri Winarno. This move aims to reduce the country's reliance on imports and enhance energy self-sufficiency by expanding the use of biofuels derived from palm oil and sugarcane. However, the plan has faced delays due to ethanol supply constraints. Initially, the energy ministry had set a target of introducing a 10% bioethanol content in 2027, but this has been postponed to 2028. The government's strategy involves setting a 5% bioethanol target by 2025, which will gradually increase to 10% by 2028 to decrease gasoline imports. Indonesia's bioethanol production goal is 0.80 million kiloliters by 2028, while the national gasoline demand is projected at 39.9 million kiloliters. To support this initiative, the government will implement various measures, including enhancing gasoline quality, expanding infrastructure capacity, and diversifying feedstocks. This approach is expected to contribute to Indonesia's sustainability efforts and energy security.
