The Los Angeles Lakers are in a serious slump, and the question on everyone's mind is: who might be on the move? As the team navigates a rough patch, with six losses in their last nine games, the looming NBA trade deadline on February 5th adds an extra layer of pressure and uncertainty.
Lakers coach JJ Redick acknowledges the very real "human element" at play. He understands that players, especially those nearing the end of their contracts or with player options, are naturally focused on their future. This includes thinking about their next big payday and, by extension, how to maximize their playing time to showcase their scoring ability. It's a delicate balance when the team's performance is dipping, and individual futures are on the line.
Here's the tricky part: The Lakers currently have eight players who could become free agents this offseason. Five of them, including LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kleber, and Jaxson Hayes, are in the final year of their current deals. On top of that, Austin Reaves, DeAndre Ayton, and Marcus Smart hold player options for the upcoming season. This means a significant portion of the roster is facing crucial decisions about their careers.
Redick recently commented on this situation after a 112-104 loss to the Clippers. He explained, "Guys are worried about their futures. And that’s what happens when you got a team full of free agents and player-options. I think it’s just natural that you’re gonna worry about the offense... and I’ve been there. (It gets) in your head a little bit: ‘Played five minutes (and) haven’t got a shot yet.’ And that’s a human thing. It’s not anybody’s fault." This sentiment highlights the internal conflict players face when trying to perform for the team while simultaneously securing their long-term financial security.
But here's where it gets really interesting: While Reaves is expected to explore free agency, the Lakers hold a significant advantage, potentially offering him a lucrative deal of up to five years and $241 million. This presents a fascinating dynamic for a player weighing his options.
As Rui Hachimura put it, reflecting on his time with the team, "I think I’ve been here for four seasons now and every year it’s almost the same but it’s different. You have to survive, too, so I get it, I understand it. I think we talked about before the season winning is going to help. So, we got to focus on that and everything is going to come out." This shows a player's understanding of the business side of the NBA, coupled with a desire to focus on team success.
Despite these individual concerns, the Lakers must push forward. They are currently two games into an eight-game road trip, with their next challenge in Dallas. The ability to compartmentalize the business of the league from the games they are paid to play is paramount.
Marcus Smart offered his perspective: “It is tough. I mean, you got guys fighting for contracts, fighting to stay on the team and you got other guys who are secure and got theirs and kind of understand where they are. But at the same time, we’re all professionals and we got to come out and do our jobs no matter what. So, the human element does come into play sometimes and you just got to be able to snap out of it quicker than what we are doing.” This underscores the mental fortitude required from professional athletes.
When asked directly about potential moves before the trade deadline, LeBron James was clear: "Yeah, I do. I do." He also expressed his desire to finish the season with the Lakers, stating, "I’m good. I’m good."
Now, for the part that might spark some debate: With the Lakers currently sitting at 26-17 and holding the sixth seed in the Western Conference, James's desire for moves suggests a belief that the current roster, despite its struggles, might not be enough to contend. Is it a sign of confidence in the team's potential, or an acknowledgment of underlying weaknesses that need addressing? What do you think the Lakers should do? Should they focus on internal improvement, or is it time to shake things up? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
