After appointing their new head coach, the Las Vegas Raiders are gearing up for the 2026 NFL Draft. This pivotal moment presents them with the chance to secure a franchise quarterback, particularly spotlighting the talented former Indiana Hoosiers star, Fernando Mendoza.

Yet, there's an intriguing scenario on the horizon—the possibility that the Raiders might opt to trade their coveted No. 1 pick in exchange for additional assets as they embark on a comprehensive rebuild, avoiding any shortcuts in the process. As it stands, there are multiple gaps within the team that urgently require attention.

Former Raiders running back Marcus Allen has voiced his belief that enhancing the offensive and defensive lines is crucial for the team's success. He strongly recommends that the Raiders contemplate trading the top draft pick for more valuable resources.

"If I were the general manager, I would lean towards trading the No. 1 pick," Allen shared during a January 28 appearance on the "Golic & Golic" show. "Selecting a quarterback is vital, but without proper protection, it can lead to disastrous outcomes for him. You never truly know how a player will respond in such circumstances, and it could have lasting mental effects."

Marcus Allen Emphasizes the Significance of Offensive Line for Las Vegas

Allen draws from his own playing experiences to highlight the significance of a strong offensive line.

"When you excel at the line of scrimmage, I'm unwavering in my stance on this. Sure, I amassed 2,000 yards during my college career, but it was the guys upfront who paved the way for me. Yes, once I broke through the line of scrimmage, the rest was up to me, but those linemen are the unsung heroes who make everything possible. Ask any great running back or quarterback who has ever played the game.

"Having reliable pass protection—where you don’t have to fret about your blind side or defenders closing in—is an incredible luxury. Unfortunately, not every quarterback has that privilege. If you look at the offensive lines competing in the Super Bowl right now, they are exceptional. They can effectively run the ball, provide solid pass blocking, and give quarterbacks ample time to throw. But without that, oh boy, chaos ensues!"

Raiders Gain Insight into Fernando Mendoza Amid Draft Speculation

The Raiders find themselves in a prime position to acquire a franchise quarterback, and Mendoza fits that bill perfectly. To add to the growing optimism surrounding him, former NFL quarterback Jordan Palmer has been closely observing Mendoza since his transition to Cal. Palmer shared insights on the January 26 edition of "The Jim Rome Show."

"I know him very well; he caught my attention on his journey to Cal," Palmer remarked. "Someone tipped me off that this kid had immense potential... Honestly, it doesn't take long to recognize that he's an NFL-caliber talent. His skill set speaks for itself—he's mobile, he can deliver every throw, and he has a knack for making timely passes."
