The harsh reality of Bollywood's 'insider' culture hit Priyanka Chopra hard early in her career, with a male co-star revealing she was cast in a film by 'mistake'!
Priyanka Chopra, who burst onto the Hindi film scene in the early 2000s, has spoken candidly about the significant hurdles she faced while building her career from the ground up. While she has achieved global superstardom, her initial years in Bollywood were far from smooth, marked by disheartening experiences and a constant battle against the industry's inherent biases.
It turns out that even after securing roles and signing contracts, Priyanka found herself being sidelined. Filmmakers or leading male actors would often opt for other actresses, leading to her being unceremoniously removed from projects she was officially part of. In one particularly jarring incident, a male co-star directly informed her that her casting in a Hindi film was a "mistake." He revealed that the director had intended the role for another actress all along, and Priyanka was only cast due to an oversight.
But here's where it gets controversial... Even though she was legally bound to the film, Priyanka felt powerless to contest the decision. Imagine being in her shoes: a signed contract, a role you've prepared for, only to be told it was all a misunderstanding! The male actor, who was slated to be her co-star in this now-shelved project, approached her while she was filming the 2007 movie 'Salaam-E-Ishq'. She initially thought he was there to offer support for their upcoming collaboration. However, the conversation took a bewildering turn.
He casually remarked, "The director gave you this movie by mistake. It was his mistake. This was always supposed to go to this other girl but we will do another one together, don’t worry about it. I just wanted to tell you myself." After delivering this rather blunt news, he simply ate and left! Can you believe the casualness of it all?
From Bollywood Queen to Starting From Scratch: Priyanka Opens Up on Risky Leap
At the tender age of 22, Priyanka described the film as a "really important movie" that simply vanished overnight. "My heart just crushed and I was like, ‘I signed a contract. Like, what do you mean?’ But that’s how it was," she shared, adding that such instances were not isolated.
Despite already having successful films under her belt and a growing reputation, she confessed to a period where she seriously considered abandoning acting altogether. The thought of returning to college even crossed her mind. However, she ultimately decided to "focus on my craft." This pivotal decision, she believes, was the key to sustaining her career and opening doors to more opportunities.
It's worth remembering that Priyanka made her Bollywood debut in 2003 with 'Andaaz', starring alongside Akshay Kumar and Lara Dutta. During this time, the industry was also seeing a surge of newcomers with strong ties to film families. This brings us to the ever-present topic of nepotism.
Priyanka reflected on her early understanding of the term: "I didn’t know what nepotism meant at the time. I just knew that every parent wants to make sure that they give their children the best future that they can, which is normal. My parents did the best that they could to make sure that I have a choice in my future so I didn’t understand what that meant or the limitations that came with it."
Looking back, she noted that several films were "taken away" from her during those crucial early years. "I was cast as a lead and suddenly, I was cast as a second lead because somebody else… You know, the politics of it just struck me and I realised that no one is making a movie for me. This person is not my uncle or I haven’t been to their home since I was 4 years old and that started becoming really apparent when you met friends and colleagues," she explained.
And this is the part most people miss... Despite these setbacks, the positive critical feedback she received for her performances became a powerful motivator to keep pushing forward. "I started looking for a variety of roles," she shared.
On the work front, Priyanka will next be seen in 'The Bluff'.
