The Texas Longhorns have concluded their 2026 recruiting cycle with a noteworthy achievement: they have secured the seventh overall ranking in the nation for this year's class. This announcement follows the signing of Elijah Ali, a three-star defensive lineman from Downey, California's St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy. With Ali's commitment, Texas proudly adds him to a roster of 24 recruits.
In the competitive landscape of college football, Texas stands out as one of only two programs within the top ten recruiting classes that signed fewer than 25 prospects, alongside Oregon. In contrast, the eight other top-ranking schools managed to secure at least 25 players, with seven of them signing 26 or more, and six exceeding 29.
What’s particularly striking about Texas's achievement is that, despite landing a top-ranked class, this year's haul marks the lowest standing under head coach Steve Sarkisian. In fact, it's the weakest class the Longhorns have seen since 2021, when they finished 15th during Tom Herman's final recruiting effort before his dismissal shortly after signing day.
This decline in rankings is partially attributed to a strategic decision by the Texas coaching staff to allocate more financial resources toward recruiting transfers rather than expanding their high school recruiting class. This gamble appears to be paying off, as Texas boasts the third-best transfer portal class nationally—an impressive feat that represents the highest-ranked transfer class in the history of the program.
Nevertheless, the 2026 recruits exhibit significant potential. Coach Sarkisian and his team have addressed key positions effectively, striking a balance between high-profile athletes who are likely to make an immediate impact and lower-profile recruits who may require further development to thrive in the SEC.
Out of the 24 new signees, 22 have already enrolled and are currently participating in spring practices, while two more—Nicolas Robertson and Elijah Ali—are expected to join the campus early in the summer to prepare for upcoming workouts ahead of fall training.
